LOST Hates Black People

A personal theory of mine is that the writing staff of the ABC series LOST, rather than presenting a supposed multicultural utopia, actually have it in for the Black Man (and Woman). Last night's episode "Enter 77" demonstrated yet again that if a character is black, he or she is marked for eventual death.

Let's go back to original cast: included among the main survivors is an African-American father and son, Michael (Harold Perrineau, Jr.) and Walt (Malcolm David Kelley); and a black woman, Rose (L. Scott Caldwell) as a supporting survivor. Walt is kidnapped at the end of the first season, and ultimately, after being reunited in the second season finale, Michael and son sail off into the sunset. Rose makes scattered appearances during the first season, gets a flashback episode during the second season, but hasn't shown up since.

Introduced at the start of the second season is Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as former-warlord/faux-priest Mister Eko, heralded as a new direction for the series, bringing a mystical counterpoint to Terry O'Quinn's character of John Locke. But a year later, yet again, Mr. Eko is killed off abruptly (at apparently, Triple-A's request)-- leaving nary a black character to be seen among the survivors.

Now the only non-white "Other", Bea Klugh (April Grace), last seen at the end of the second season, makes a sudden reappearance, and just as sudden death.

All I gotta say is that Rose better watch her back.

DHARMA gets busy… with more blondes

So Lost kicked off its third season tonight, with the usual mess 'o new mysteries, flashback revelations and Evangeline Lily taking a hot shower.

Oh, and if you haven't seen it yet: big ol' spoilers below...

Elizabeth MitchellJulie BowenAs with the opener last year, the first shot is a close-up eyeball of a new character, the latest blonde hottie to be added: "Juliet" played by Elizabeth Mitchell -- who perhaps not so coincidentally looks an awful lot like Julie Bowen (AKA Jack's ex-wife). Leastwise, seems they've got more for her to do than the last two killed-off blondes. (Hint: Like being Jack's love interest.)

Latest answers: yes, "The Others" are left-over DHARMA guys, and have an unseen station... one that explains the polar bears and sharks. Oh, and they apparently have reading groups to discuss Stephen King novels.

Backpatting, Wiki-style

As the three regular readers of my blog may know, I've been a Wikipedia-addict for the past two years. This is, perhaps not so coincidentally how long the series Lost has been on the air. Since last year, I've been a regular (perhaps excessively so) editor for the show's article -- and now, it's all worth it: check out today's featured article on Wikipedia's Main Page (October 3).

Oh, and Lost is back on Wednesday-- not that I have to remind my quarter-of-a-dozen readers. I'm sure I'm going to find something wrong with it too.

Incidentally, the best pilot I've seen thus far this season is Dexter, a procedural with a psychotic twist, which may be Showtime's answer to The Sopranos. Think CSI crossed with Hannibal Lecter. If you don't get Showtime, you can check it out for free on their secret promotional site (Password: "sneak peak"). Definitely not for the squimish, though.

LOST girls get the big kiss-off

Ana-Lucia and Libby, we hardly knew ya.

The short version: Two dead tailies. Death due to too much partying.

Last December, Lost actresses Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros got picked up for drunk driving. Watros pleaded out and got a $300 fine and 14 hours of counseling. Rodriguez played the diva card yelling at the arresting officer, "put a gun to my head and shoot me!" She got a high-priced lawyer, claimed she "lost everything", selling her car and house to pay her legal bill. Final verdict: $500 fine and a 5 day vacation in jail. Her excuse? Steroids due to allergies to cockroach resin.

Apparently her behavior on the set wasn't much better.

Contactmusic.com broke the news last week that both were due to be voted off the Island. Rumors had been floated since last month, when Rodriguez's trailer was turned in. Tonight, they got hit with a double-whammy, courtesy of conveniently returned Harold Perrineau Jr.
